We all celebrate International Women’s Day on March 8th, but how many of us know its roots? Let us take a moment to consider history behind this observed day – which by the way now enjoys official holiday in Armenia, Afghanistan, Cambodia, Russia, China and Cuba in addition to many other countries. So, yes back to history… IWD traces its roots back to March 8th, 1908 when about 15,000 women marched through the streets of New York displaying the courage to stand up for their rights. It is 2016 and we need to celebrate this day not only to honor the historical movement but to keep that movement going.
“A woman with a voice is by definition a strong woman. But the search to find that voice can be remarkable difficult.” – Melinda Gates
So you see, Women’s Day is more than just being pretty, awesome and always right. The significance of this day lies in what it represents: the past, present and more importantly, the future. Women have come a long way since 1908 and there is a lot to celebrate. But there is also a lot more work to be done across the four corners of the globe.
This IWD let us all take a moment to honor all those women who have inspired us, encouraged us and nurtured us through their silent sacrifices and compromises. Not only should we think about women who have achieved great feats in life by being the first woman novelist, songwriter, singer or President, but to all those women in our life who have brought about big changes through their unwavering support and affection. Yes, we are talking about mothers, sisters, wives, fiancées, girl friends and every other woman.
Honor the Spirit of IWD in Your Own Small Way
Maybe start by respecting women and fighting alongside to boost empowerment and equality in all walks of life. Give your mom a hug, take your sister out to this new restaurant she has been nagging about, take a day off to just talk and listen to your wife or give your girl friend the attention she has been craving for. You could maybe donate to a women’s cause of your choice and make your little contribution towards the upliftment of women in our society.
To further brighten up the day of all the women in your life, give them a surprise that they will remember and cherish for days to come. Send maybe flowers, cakes or chocolates online and make them feel as special as they are.
“Women have always been the strong ones of the world. The men are always seeking from women a little pillow to put their heads down on. They are always longing for the mother who held them as infants.” – Coco Chanel
A man is nothing without a woman and vice-versa. So, take International Women’s Day as an opportunity to create an environment where children can flourish without the pressure of gender stereotypes and with the help of e-gift stores, make every woman in your life feel extraordinary.
